Strategies for finding cheap auto insurance
The internet, radio, television and direct mail are full of promises from virtually every insurnce carrier promising the ability to significantly lower your rates. How is virtually every insurance company able to promise such large savings? There are several common answers
- Typically your current premiums have not been reviewed in some period of time to reflect your current driving record.
- Rates in general have decreased over the past few years.
- The company is willing to give lower premiums to attract new business.
Regardless of the reasons, the majority of shoppers actually find lower quotes than they are currently paying. Our tool at the top of this page allows you to enter your zip code and be returned a list of some of the major players in the business targeting customers where you live. We have found that if you take the time to get a quote from one of these companies, that you probably find rates cheaper than you are currently paying in most instances. Whether the savings is enough for you to switch carriers is a separate question that only you can answer.
Legal minimum insurance requirements
Georgia requires that all automobiles be insured with a minimum of $25,00/$50,00 coverage. This means that the coverage for injury or death must provide at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per occurrence.
If a person does not have sufficient coverage they ill be subject to a fine for a first occurence with subsequent violations resulting in steeper penalties. A person involved in an accident has insufffient insurance the person is subject to stiffer penalties and even inpoundment of the vehicle.
Comparison of Georgia to other states
Although there are many metrics to compare insurance costs between states, Georgia ranks right near the middle in auto insurance affordability, ranking 25th of 50 states in the latest industry statistical compilations. Factors affecting average rates for a State as a whole include things such as polulation (the more drivers, the more likely to be involved in an accident), the density of population (the more vehicles in a given area, the more likely to have an accident), cost of living (cost to repair your car), medical costs and related factors. Georgia, having both major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, but also large rural areas fittingly finds itself in the middle of the pack in average rates.
Discounts commonly available
There are many types of discouts that insurers offer to give discounts on rates. Typically these reward either safer driving histories or safer cars. Common discounts include:
- Vehicle Safety Equipment Discounts
- Safe Driver Discounts
- Driver Education Courses For Young Drivers
- Senior Citizen Discount
- Multi Policy Discounts
- Low Mileage Discounts
- Discount For Term Of Payment
- Student Discounts
Virtually all of these discounts relate to the overall risk posed by the insured driver. For younger drivers, having been trained through a driver education course or having proven responsible enough to receive good grades is assumed to translate into greater responsiblity and safety behind the wheel. The same holds true for discounts offered because off a good driving rating or low mileage - the less you drive, or the longer you have driven safely, the less likely you are to have a claim in the future.
